It’s NOT one more thing: integrating evidence-based SEL into academic instruction
In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about the foundations of evidence-based Social-emotional learning (SEL), why it’s now more important than ever before, important SEL misconceptions, and concrete steps to implement SEL directly into the academic instruction work. The workshop is highly beneficial for all stakeholders engaged in ‘whole child education’: from school administrators to teachers and counselors and parents! SEL evidence is growing daily and, as important as understanding what it *is*, it’s critical to understand what it *is not* and implement appropriately, efficiently and at scale. The interactive workshop includes activities to model how the key obstacles for SEL integration into academic instruction can be overcome *daily* for optimal student preparedness. Co-presenter, Silvia Mendoza, will lead select activities to model how integrated SEL and academic rigor has transformed her classroom.

STEAMIE Meenie Miney Mo: Creating a STEAM Curriculum for Our Littlest Learners
No need to wait to innovate! Preschoolers are filled with natural curiosity. Let’s build on that by developing engineering practices in preschool. By combining science concepts with inventive engineering challenges, we capitalize on that wonderment and awe while at the same time cultivating a student’s natural desire to explore and discover. With just enough support, preschoolers can learn to identify a problem, imagine possible solutions, blueprint a design, build a prototype, test and improve upon it, and communicate their ideas. Curious how engineering practices can be integrated into preschool classrooms? Come play! See how beloved and entertaining storybooks can serve as catalysts for wildly engaging STEAM lessons for our smallest scholars’. We’ll discuss why engineering practices are an important part of early learning and participate in a number of successful examples of STEAM activities integrated into preschool classrooms.

Hacking School Culture: Designing Compassionate Classrooms
How might we define the characteristics of a compassionate educator? What do compassionate classrooms look like? How might teachers “hack” school culture, one classroom at a time? How might they cultivate self-compassion in their own lives?

Through self-reflection and group discussion, this interactive session will explore case studies of how educators are using human-centered, strengths-based approaches to create learning environments where seeking a greater understanding of themselves and others is the highest standard.

Based on the book Hacking School Culture: Designing Compassionate Classrooms, by Angela Stockman and Ellen Feig Gray, this session will highlight examples of specific tools, protocols, and evidence-based practices that teachers are testing and refining to build empathy and cultivate compassion in their own classrooms.

Participants will be invited, and hopefully empowered and inspired, to consider how they might become agents of positive change by cultivating empathy and compassion through practice.

All the World's a Classroom
The world is at our fingertips in the form of our smartphones. Children can explore the world virtually and in real-time through other’s travel experiences. Teachers first model distance learning trips by connecting from another place in the world with students in the classroom. Teachers explore personal interests through travel, sharing various cultural, historical and geographical features with children. They model curiosity, risk-taking, visible thinking, and lifelong learning. Once children have seen this in action, they now can take the role of the teacher as they explore the world. Personalized learning organically evolves as the child carves their own path following their interests, preparing for travel through reading, researching, and consulting with others. Teachers guide interested participants through the zoom app, schedule meeting times, and then facilitate virtual meetings. After each zoom session, participants reflect on their learning and the impact of shared experiences and common interests as relationship builders.

Get Unstuck Using Visual Thinking
Sketchnoting empowers users to discover how to shift gears in their own mind to feel more in-charge of their learning and navigate the information they are giving or receiving. Most often, this shift in gears can lead to moving from a place where they are STUCK to a place where they are free to connect with information and make “what is silent heard and what is hidden apparent”. Sketchnoting practices have been successful in helping with retention of content in all subject areas and has proven to be successful with ELL and those who struggle with traditional linear thinking. This session is for educators who want to convey content to students in a ways that more types of learners can digest it and who want to offer their students options for expressing their ideas. It is also a way to open conversation about the differences in the way students process information. Participants will have time to reflect on the “HOW” of their content delivery and leave with an action plan for embedding sketchnoting into their class.

Make the Move Against 1:1, Why Technology Centers Work
In this visual, immediate gratification world in which we live, 1:1 technology programs seem to be all the rage. Has this improved learning? Yes, information is ubiquitous, but does the plethora of resources equal or even lead to higher achievement? How are critical thinking and interpersonal skills affected? Come to this session and learn why our school, through thoughtful discussion, came to the conclusion that a 1:1 program actually went against our mission of excellence. In our classes, students work in centers, often on computers, but just as often, engaged in meaningful face to face dialogue. Critical thinking becomes the focus, technology just a tool, which in turn enables deep learning. This session will allow time for audience conversation and debate.

In an increasingly globalized world, where human suffering is more visible than ever before, compassion offers us a compass: a way of life that points towards building trust, reducing conflict, improving cooperation, and maximizing the potential of our relationships. In that regard, the benefits of practicing compassion in the classroom cannot be underestimated; its contagious effect has the power to transform school culture into a place where students feel like they belong AND that they can change the world.
