Hacking School Culture: Designing Compassionate Classrooms

How might we define the characteristics of a compassionate educator? What do compassionate classrooms look like? How might teachers “hack” school culture, one classroom at a time? How might they cultivate self-compassion in their own lives?

Through self-reflection and group discussion, this interactive session will explore case studies of how educators are using human-centered, strengths-based approaches to create learning environments where seeking a greater understanding of themselves and others is the highest standard.

Based on the book Hacking School Culture: Designing Compassionate Classrooms, by Angela Stockman and Ellen Feig Gray, this session will highlight examples of specific tools, protocols, and evidence-based practices that teachers are testing and refining to build empathy and cultivate compassion in their own classrooms.

The world is at our fingertips in the form of our smartphones. Children can explore the world virtually and in real-time through other’s travel experiences. Teachers first model distance learning trips by connecting from another place in the world with students in the classroom. Teachers explore personal interests through travel, sharing various cultural, historical and geographical features with children. They model curiosity, risk-taking, visible thinking, and lifelong learning. Once children have seen this in action, they now can take the role of the teacher as they explore the world. Personalized learning organically evolves as the child carves their own path following their interests, preparing for travel through reading, researching, and consulting with others. Teachers guide interested participants through the zoom app, schedule meeting times, and then facilitate virtual meetings. After each zoom session, participants reflect on their learning and the impact of shared experiences and common interests as relationship builders.

Get Unstuck Using Visual Thinking

Sketchnoting empowers users to discover how to shift gears in their own mind to feel more in-charge of their learning and navigate the information they are giving or receiving. Most often, this shift in gears can lead to moving from a place where they are STUCK to a place where they are free to connect with information and make “what is silent heard and what is hidden apparent”. Sketchnoting practices have been successful in helping with retention of content in all subject areas and has proven to be successful with ELL and those who struggle with traditional linear thinking. This session is for educators who want to convey content to students in a ways that more types of learners can digest it and who want to offer their students options for expressing their ideas. It is also a way to open conversation about the differences in the way students process information.
